TASTING NOTES:
Almost opaque in color, this wine is layered with fresh floral, herbal and dark red fruit notes. Aromas of violets and rosebuds are gently mixed with spices like cardamom, coriander, allspice. Concentrated dark red fruits such as cherries, cassis, and plums are complemented by the rich flavors of figs and dates. On the palate the fruit comingles with bitter chocolate and toffee. Complex and balanced. The super long finish is weighted by oak spices and vanilla notes that will become more integrated as the wine matures.

59% Petit Verdot and 41% Cabernet Sauvignon
Our
Petit Verdot plantings are located in
the northeast corner of the vineyard in a tiny, 1.12 acre plot first planted in
1994. The soil is extremely rocky and
the yields are particularly small, producing very small berries with a high
concentration of flavor. "V" is then fermented in small concrete tanks to
preserve the aromas and supple tannins. Concrete tanks (produced in Burgundy,
France) allow for a slower, more natural, low-temperature evolution of the wine
during fermentation. "V" shows such a distinct personality as to remind you of "liquid bittersweet chocolate in the glass."
Alan Viader refers to the 2017 growing season as the “roller coaster” vintage due to the dramatic temperature swings the estate vineyards experienced throughout the year. Cooler spring rains started the year off with a full, impressive canopy only to quickly dry out and warm up in the early summer. Multiple, intense heat events occurred throughout the years starting at flowering, then another one during fruit-set, and another one at veraison and again at harvest. The heat spikes slowed maturity and kept berry size small and concentrated. It was the equivalent to running 2 back-to-back marathons for our resilient little hillside vineyards. The vintage's underlying characteristics as a result are grace and elegance.
